Fast-Tracked Security Upgrades for the Oyster Creek Nuclear Generating Station
ABOUT
The Design Basis Threat (DBT) Security Upgrade project consisted of the fast-tracked security enhancements required by the Nuclear Regulatory Commission (NRC) at the Oyster Creek Nuclear Generating Station in Forked River, New Jersey. The work consisted of the following:
- Design/build of a new 6,400 square foot Security Access Building (SAB) incorporating a blast resistant structural design with integral vehicle barrier walls, and a new sally port to the expanded Protected Area (PA).
- Security systems incorporated into the design included microwave, infra-red, x-ray, radiation detection, explosive detection, CCTV cameras, and locking turnstiles with access card readers.
- Design/build of a new Security Vehicle Checkpoint including new access roads, a parking lot, 9 acres of tree clearing, all site improvements, 16,500 SY of paved roadways, a new guardhouse, detention gates, active vehicle gates, CCTV cameras, and lighting.
- Erection of 7 steel, blast resistant, guard towers with specially designed foundations that required over (50) 60LF long 4″ diameter drilled anchors, grouted into the subsoil and tension tested. The towers, up to 60 feet tall, were erected inside the Protected Area while normal and plant operations continued.
- Design/build of a new CCTV perimeter camera system including lighting, controls, and recording systems.
- Design/build of a major expansion of the microwave system, including over 80 new devices and 10 miles of conduit, along with its incorporation into new and existing security intruder detection systems.
- Defensive guard positions incorporating bullet resistant steel panels installed on several building roofs inside the Protected Area.
- Specially designed barriers installed across waterways to limit marine access.
- Design/build of a new 2,800 SF hydrogen unloading and storage facility, including 1,000 FT of gas piping.
- Installation of over 6,000 FT of vehicle barriers (VBS), and 4,500 tons of stone.
